A ceremony to rename a Venango County bridge to honor a local firefighter who lost his life in the line of duty will be held this Saturday (May 27), according to Senator Scott Hutchinson, the author of the legislation authorizing the designation.
Act 90 of 2016 was amended prior to final passage to include the language of Senator Hutchinson’s Senate Bill 1315, designating the State Route 4010 bridge over Sugar Creek in Sugarcreek Borough, Venango County, as the “Lieutenant Andrew J. White Memorial Bridge.” White, a 12-year veteran of the Rocky Grove Fire Department, died when he was trapped during a January 2001 mobile home fire. He was 27 years old.
Senator Hutchinson will participate in the ceremony set for 10 a.m. at the bridge. He will be joined by state Fire Commissioner Tim Solobay, state Representative Lee James, Sugarcreek Mayor Jeff MacKenzie, Sugarcreek Police Chief Matthew Carlson and police Chaplain Reverend Gary Atkinson.
“This is truly a fitting ceremony for the Memorial Day weekend, when we remember and honor America’s heroes. This memorial ceremony is for the White family and our entire community. But it is also a tribute to all those who put their lives on the line for us each day,” Senator Hutchinson said. “We must never forget the dangers that our local responders face when they respond to an emergency and we have a duty to honor the memory of those who make the ultimate sacrifice.”
